U.S. Representative Daniel Webster (FL-08) issued the following statement on House passage of H.R. 4281, the Surface Transportation Extension Act of 2012.
"A long term, multi-year highway authorization is critical to rebuilding our nation's infrastructure, reforming antiquated and inefficient transportation programs, strengthening the economy, and creating jobs. A long term authorization is also necessary to provide the certainty and stability necessary for the transportation industry to contain costs through long term planning. Unfortunately, agreement on a long term authorization does not yet exist and transportation programs are scheduled to expire this Saturday at midnight.
"H.R. 4281 allows both the House and the Senate to avoid this looming calamity and keeps the potential of a bipartisan, bicameral authorization that can provide overdue stability alive. Unless the Senate acts to pass H.R. 4281, a short term extension, construction projects all across our nation will grind to a halt and thousands of jobs will be lost due to brinksmanship and Senate inaction. I urge the Senate to pass this short term extension immediately and renew their commitment to work with the House to provide our transportation planners and construction workers with long term certainty," said Webster.
