Murphy Announces New Federal Housing Dollars for Homeless Vets in Waterbury

Press Release

Congressman Chris Murphy today announced that the Waterbury Housing Authority will receive $257,629 for 40 vouchers to help the region's homeless veteran population through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (HUD-VASH).

"Every night, veterans who have served our country go to sleep on the streets of Connecticut," said Murphy. "That's wrong. When our veterans return from active duty, it's our turn to serve them. These vouchers are a huge victory for our homeless veterans in Waterbury and for those that have dedicated their lives to helping them get back on their feet."

Allocated under a joint initiative between HUD and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the HUD-VASH program provides permanent supportive housing and dedicated VA case managers for an estimated 10,000 homeless veterans nationwide.

"It's a national disgrace that one out of every six men and women in our shelters once wore a uniform to serve our country," said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. "But we know that by providing housing assistance and case management services, we can significantly reduce the number of veterans living on our streets. Working together, HUD, VA and local housing agencies are making real progress toward ending veteran homelessness once and for all."
