Rep. Maxine Waters Supports the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Waters joined her colleagues as one of the original co-sponsors of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2012. This legislation strengthens the abilities of the Federal Government, States, law enforcement, and service providers to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

"All Americans are entitled to feel safe in their workplace, in their homes, and walking on the street," Rep. Waters said. "Yet too many women continue to live in fear. And that is why we must reauthorize and strengthen the Violence Against Women Act."

The Violence Against Women Act has a strong track record of success, demonstrably improving the criminal justice system's ability to keep victims safe and hold perpetrators accountable. The annual incidence of domestic violence has dropped more than 50 percent since the law was originally enacted.

"The original passage of the Violence Against Women Act was a watershed moment and a bipartisan victory," Rep. Waters said. "I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to join me in again making progress to protect America's women and children."
