Congressman Steve Rothman (NJ-9) released the following statement:
The Republican budget proposal is a direct assault on the Middle Class, seniors, and Medicare. It's an absolute atrocity and continues the Republican obsession with helping the wealthiest Americans at the expense of everyone else. This legislation will end the Medicare guarantee by creating a voucher program for future Medicare beneficiaries while giving those who make more than $1 million per year an average tax cut of $394,000.
Congressman Ryan's bill also breaks the bipartisan budget agreement reached during the August 2011 debt ceiling negotiations and, once again, threatens a government shutdown. In breaking this agreement, the Republican budget proposal would cost American jobs -- 4.1 million jobs through 2014, according to the Economic Policy Institute -- and create more uncertainty in our economy.
Just like last year, the Republican budget proposal will increase the gap between the richest and poorest in America, while seeking to balance the budget on the backs of seniors and the Middle Class. I call on my colleagues to honor our past agreements and come to the table to work on real solutions, not a budget proposal that hurts our fragile economic recovery and betrays our American values.
