Recent cases of prisoner abuse and the administration's failure to act on measures to eliminate torture have deeply shamed our nation. The Bill of Rights specifically prohibits the infliction of "cruel and unusual punishment". Torture often implies punishment prior to conviction of a crime and is a violation of the extremely important bedrock legal principles of due process, presumption of innocence, habeas corpus and the rule of law. We must renounce this downward spiral that compromises the ideals of our country. Torture is inhumane, ineffective, and jeopardizes the safety of our own military personnel. As a U.S. senator, I will initiate and support measures to eliminate torture and prisoner abuse.
