Issue Position: Ensure Consumer Product Safety

Issue Position

The increasingly global economy can sometimes make it a challenge for Utahns to determine if the items they buy are safe and have not been adapted or counterfeited. This is especially important when it comes to keeping our kids safe from products that may harm them or make them sick.

* Jim has taken action to limit lead in children's products, change product recall time requirements and set up a database of plants that fail to meet safety standards.
* Jim also helped fix inflexible rules that affected children's products sold at thrift stores and charitable organizations to allow families to continue sharing favorite toys with friends and neighbors in their community.
* When tests by Utah health department labs showed lead content in serving dishes that exceeded safety standards, Jim led the fight for tougher product labeling standards so that consumers would know about possible lead hazards. Families deserve to know about the products they purchase in order to make informed choices about what they use in their homes.
