The federal government has the important Constitutional role to provide for the common defense. We have the best military in the world and it must remain the best. In our own Fourth District we have vital bases from which our men and women are called to defend freedom around the world. They must have the best equipment, latest technology, and proactive leadership that recognizes and funds all possible avenues of threat mitigation, including a strong missile defense.
Our commitments must keep the support for our active and retired military a priority, and legislation must be free of partisan political manipulation. Moves by Nancy Pelosi and Ike Skelton to tie funding for soldiers, sailors and airmen to the extreme agenda items of the gay movement is a sad chapter that must not be repeated.
Tragic events keep reminding us that we are in a war against terrorism. We do not want to be in this conflict. We did not start it, but we must finish it. Our safety and future depend on defeating the extremists who hate everything that has made our nation the greatest in history.
