Gov. Jay Nixon today issued the following statement to thank the members of the bi-partisan apportionment commission, as they concluded their work in setting new boundaries for the 34 districts in the Missouri Senate.
"I greatly appreciate the members of the bi-partisan apportionment commission for completing their work in a thorough, thoughtful and expedited fashion. The commission has brought certainty to this process, and has done so quickly enough to give sufficient time for those considering filing for office to make their decisions. I want to thank the commission members for their service to our state, and for bringing this process to a close."
On Jan. 31, the Governor appointed the 10 members of the commission, selecting five members from each of the lists of 10 names submitted to him by the state committees of the two major political parties. The Missouri Supreme Court issued a ruling in January invalidating a previous senatorial map approved by a panel of appellate judges, necessitating the appointment of the bi-partisan commission.
