Statement

Date: March 16, 2012
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Women

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, who will become the longest-serving woman in congressional history tomorrow:

"Senator Barbara Mikulski has dedicated her life to breaking down barriers, forging new paths, and opening wide the doors of opportunity for the next generation of women leaders. As the first Democratic woman elected to the Senate in her own right, she led the way for the many of us who came to public service after her. As she becomes the longest-serving woman in congressional history, she demonstrates the enduring nature of her leadership.

"It is a point of personal pride to me that Senator Mikulski and I both grew up in Baltimore, and attended the same high school: the Institute of Notre Dame.

"Long may Senator Mikulski's record stand."
