Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-06) released the following statement today about her co-sponsorship of H.R. 3662, the Down Payment to Protect National Security Act.
"President Obama's budget proposal for the Department of Defense confirms that the President is committed to paying for his bloated domestic spending programs by asking our soldiers and veterans to pick up the tab. But just as President Obama has asked our military to take $487 billion in cuts, he is prepared to cut the military by another $500 billion starting in January with so-called "sequestration.' That is irresponsible. Congress must act swiftly to stave off sequestration and protect our military, our veterans and their families. That is why I am proud to co-sponsor H.R. 3662 with the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, Buck McKeon."
"I am delighted Congresswoman Bachmann has joined our effort to stop sequestration from hitting our soldiers and veterans," Chairman Buck McKeon (CA-25) said. "She has been a fierce advocate for our men and women in uniform. I look forward to working with her this year to deliver on the sacred promises we have made to our military."
H.R. 3662 would fully pay the cost of one year of sequestration by reducing the size of the federal workforce by 10 percent through attrition.
