Following severe flooding several years ago, hundreds of Arkansans underwent FEMA's extensive application and inspection process to receive disaster assistance so they could repair, rebuild and recover. Last year, FEMA demanded repayment from many of these families because of the agency's own mistakes. I led the charge to protect these families, passing a law that allows FEMA to waive debt in cases where it erred in paying out disaster assistance.
In accordance to my law, FEMA recently mailed letters to 90,000 individuals telling them they may be eligible for a waiver, if they respond within 60 days. Arkansans who receive this letter can visit my website to find additional information about steps to take, as well as an interactive map showing the number of households affected in each county and the average amount each household owes.
