Hall Votes for "PIONEERS" Act, Energy Jobs Bill

Statement

Today Rep. Ralph Hall (TX-04) voted with a House majority in favor of H.R. 3408, the Protecting Investment in Oil Shale the Next Generation of Environmental, Energy, and Resource Security Act, or PIONEERS Act, which passed 237-187.

"The PIONEERS Act is a common sense jobs plan that would create millions of much-needed American jobs and generate new revenue at a time when families and job creators need it most," said Hall. "When our national debt is over $14.5 trillion, our unemployment rate has remained at or above 8% for over three years, and the average gas price exceeds $3.50, it's clear that the President's policies are leading the country on the wrong track."

"Today's bill takes the initiative and offers real solutions for job creation and economic growth by expanding American energy production," Hall further stated. "This is not a short-term stimulus, but a long-term plan that invests in the future of our country."

"In his State of the Union address, the President claimed he supports 'all-of-the-above' energy. The PIONEER Act allows the President to back-up his claims by removing federal government barriers blocking production of energy resources in our own backyard."

Specifically, The PIONEERS Act would:

Expand offshore energy production;

Open less than 3% of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska, set aside in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter for oil and natural gas development, which is not considered wilderness;Today

Promote development of U.S. oil shale on government land; and

Require approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline.

"By removing energy barriers, America can decrease its dependence on foreign oil, improve national security, and lower gas prices. Increasing energy production would also promote long-term job creation and an increase in revenue.

"I believe that many of the President's actions are put in motion with his reelection in mind. He is very political, and I believe politics can change his position. I believe that he will change his decision on the Keystone Pipeline and drilling on American soil for much-needed energy as we move closer to $4 per gallon gas prices. The American people will pressure him to change his position on the Pipeline and drilling, and I hope it is in time to prevent losing these jobs and energy to China.
