Today, Congressman John Sullivan, Vice Chair of the Energy and Power Subcommittee, offered the following statement after voting for H.R. 3408, the Protecting Investment in Oil Shale the Next Generation of Environmental, Energy, and Resource Security Act (The PIONEERS Act). This bill will create over 1 million jobs by removing government barriers that block production of our nation's own energy resources by forcing the Obama Administration to move forward with new offshore and onshore energy production in areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska, and on federal lands and waters. This legislation would also approve the privately funded Keystone XL Pipeline. H.R. 3408 passed the House by a vote of 237 - 187.

"The sad fact is that that gas prices have risen a whopping 83% since President Obama took office. It is evident that his Administration has no plan for energy security and they continue to ignore the severity of our addiction to foreign oil. Our nation spends at least $1 billion per day overseas for foreign oil - when the fact of the matter is that that we have ample domestic oil and natural gas resources here in our own backyard. With rising gas prices, it is in both of our economic and national security interests for President Obama to remove barriers that block production of our energy resources.

The Keystone XL Pipeline is a no-brainer; this pipeline would facilitate access to more North American oil resources so that we can create 20,000 private sector jobs while providing our nation with a stable supply of oil from Alberta, Canada and North Dakota. Additionally, the exploration of the ANWR could create tens of thousands of jobs and generate billions of dollars in new revenue by opening less than 3% of the refuge in Alaska to responsible energy development. If this legislation is signed into law, these two projects alone would go a long way in creating jobs for our struggling economy.

While the Obama Administration continues to turn their back on jobs and energy security, I will keep supporting legislation that will grow our economy and alleviate the pain at the pump for American consumers. The PIONEERS Act will achieve those goals and more, and I call on the Senate and President Obama to support this common sense initiative to secure our energy and economic future."
