U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-FL, today supported an amendment to ensure that Florida receives its fair share of compensation from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that devastated the region in 2010.
Specifically, the House-approved measure would set aside 80 percent of the fines collected from the oil spill and direct it to the Gulf Coast for restoration efforts.
"This will help bring justice to Florida," said Buchanan. "Less than two years have passed since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill devastated countless communities throughout our region. The disaster took an enormous toll on our economy and the Gulf's environment. It is only fair that those hardest hit receive the relief they so desperately deserve."
This month, BP is expected to reach a settlement with the federal government over the companies violations of the federal Clean Water Act.
