It is imperative to our national security that we end our reliance on foreign energy. When the slightest hint of trouble in the Middle East causes the cost of a gallon of gasoline in the United States to sky-rocket, our energy policy must change. When a once-in-a-lifetime natural disaster in Japan causes world-wide fears about the potential danger of nuclear energy, our energy policy must change. We must ensure that the American people are educated and aware of the benefits and risks of different energy policies, and that our economic livelihoods are not held hostage by whoever controls a pipeline.
