Smith Signs Bipartisan Letter To Sebelius Opposing Mandatory Contraception Rule

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) joined a bipartisan group of 154 Members of Congress on a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. This letter opposes HHS's new government mandate forcing religious-affiliated organizations which offer health insurance to cover the full cost of contraceptives, sterilizations, and abortifacients even if it is a clear violation of their conscience rights.

"HHS's latest decision to mandate contraceptive, sterilization, and abortifacients coverage is an unprecedented overreach by the federal government that infringes upon rights guaranteed by the First Amendment," wrote Smith and 153 other bipartisan Members of Congress.

Smith also added, "Nebraskans have voiced their opposition to the White House's decision to impose this rule. I appreciate hearing from them."
