To me, it's simple: education means opportunity -- opportunity for a good job, a better life for our kids, a healthier economy for us all. We need another Sputnik moment where we do more to invest in creating a brighter future for our next generation in order to ensure that we can never be defeated in the classroom. That means financial support for our schools, and instituting responsible reforms, so that our kids can compete for a job in rural Colorado, or anywhere in the world. As House Democratic leader, I led a bipartisan effort to reinvest $90 million more into our kids' schools than was otherwise planned. To me, it was a matter of setting priorities. I'm angry that Colorado has had to cut so much from our education budgets. We're asking teachers to do more with less, but we must understand that good schools start with good teachers and principals, and we must give them the tools and support they need to succeed.

We need to ask more of parents, even though so many are over-stretched and working harder than ever. But a commitment to education begins at home. Parents, teachers, administrators, entire communities must be partners in investing in our kids.
