Today Rep. Todd Rokita issued the following statement responding to the U.S. Department of Education's decision to grant Indiana a waiver from certain requirements of No Child Left Behind:
"I was pleased to learn yesterday from Education Secretary Arne Duncan that Indiana will receive a waiver from some aspects of No Child Left Behind. Under the leadership of Governor Daniels and Secretary Bennett, I have every confidence that Indiana's schools are heading in the right direction. Greater flexibility provided by this waiver will undoubtedly help them push reform forward and continue to improve Indiana's schools.
It is unfortunate, however, that the federal government is granting this waiver on a conditional basis. Education is a responsibility best left to the states, and it is time for the federal government to step aside. I will continue to work to reduce and eventually eliminate federal interference in education because it is not good for our kids or our schools."
