Congressman Cantor (VA-07) today released the following statement regarding the Navy's decision to cancel its plans to move an aircraft carrier currently based in Norfolk Naval Station to Mayport in Florida. The decision comes after several years of persistent efforts by the Virginia Delegation requesting that the Navy provide strategic analysis demonstrating the national security advantage of moving the carrier to another location on the East Coast.
"This is great news for Virginia. The Navy's decision to keep the carrier in Norfolk is a major victory for Virginia and our nation's security interests. Given the strain on military budgets, this is a responsible decision that will ensure the most effective use of federal dollars while maintaining a strong, capable fleet of carriers to keep our country safe and defend our freedom. I applaud Armed Services Subcommittee Chairman Randy Forbes and Representatives Rob Wittman and Scott Rigell for their leadership on this important national security issue and look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure that Virginia is able to continue to play a critical role in protecting our country."
