Brown Announces New Resources to Replace Septic Systems With New Public Sewer System in Neffs

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced new federal resources for a Belmont County town to replace outdated septic systems with a new public sewer system. A grant totaling $388,000 is being made available to the town of Neffs through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"These resources will help support critically important infrastructure improvements in Neffs--improvements that will help protect the public health," Brown said. "These funds spell good news for the Belmont County residents who will be served by the new sewer system."

According to the EPA, the funds will be used for a larger project to eliminate approximately 160 failed septic systems in the main area of Neffs. The County will replace these systems with a public sanitary sewer collection system. The system will flow into a sewage lift station and then pump into an existing force main, which will flow into the Eastern Ohio Region wastewater treatment plant.

Brown, along with then-Sen. George V. Voinovich (R-OH), authored the Clean Water Affordability Act in April 2009. The legislation aims to update the EPA clean water affordability policy to provide for a full and accurate representation of the financial impacts clean water investment programs place on communities struggling to meet federal regulations for improving water infrastructure.
