Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) released the following statement in response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address:

"I commend the President for delivering an address this evening that renews the country's focus on the values that make our country great," said Congressman Richmond. "While the fortunes of a few have improved over the years, the fortunes of too many have suffered tremendously. We must do all we can, together, to improve the lot of all our citizens. It is what makes us Americans, and it is what makes our country great. American "exceptionalism' is not a birth right. It is something that is earned through freedom, democracy, equality, and the promise to reach unlimited heights through hard work."

"I appreciate the President's acknowledgement that American oil production is the highest it's been in eight years. This is a result of the hard work of the men and women in the oil and gas industry. I look forward to continuing work with the President to maintain this growth in the oil and gas industry even as we diversify the nation's energy sources."

"The President's sincere efforts to improve the lives of every day Americans have been met with obstruction at every turn. I call on my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to rise above party and politics to work with the President to meet the challenges that face our country and our people. If that obstructionism persists, I am prepared to stand with the President to fight it. The future of our country depends on it."
