Flores Challenges President's Failed Economic Record After State of the Union Address

U.S. Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) released the following statement tonight regarding President Obama's State of the Union address:

"Since President Obama took office, Americans have witnessed a deficit that has more than doubled, the longest period of sustained high unemployment since the Great Depression and more Americans in poverty than ever before in history. It is clear that President Obama's policies have failed and are making the economy worse. Not only has the president failed the American middle class, but also seniors, "Main Street' job creators and our children and grandchildren.

"Tonight during his State of the Union address, President Obama was unable to defend his disastrous economic record, and instead, attempted to sell another campaign speech filled with more of the same empty rhetoric and unfulfilled promises. Yet, to middle-class Americans experiencing 35 straight months of unemployment above 8 percent and gas prices that have doubled over the course of this administration, the president has not just failed to give us the recovery he promised -- his policies are preventing new jobs for American workers.

"Just last week, the president buried the opportunity to create tens of thousands of shovel-ready, American jobs and increase our energy security by denying the environmentally safe Keystone XL energy pipeline. By continuing to lock up our nation's abundant natural resources and implement new regulations that block and delay domestic energy production, President Obama continues to dismiss common-sense opportunities to maximize job and economic benefits without wasting away hard-earned taxpayer dollars.

"House Republicans have continued to pass pro-jobs, pro-growth legislation that addresses the real drivers of our debt and includes fundamental pro-growth tax reform, eliminates corporate loopholes and subsidies to help create more job opportunities like Keystone, and ends taxpayer-funded bailouts like Solyndra. House Republicans have a "Plan for America's Job Creators' -- it's time for the president and Senate Democrats to work with us and follow through on their high-flying rhetoric with a serious commitment to our country's energy, economic and national security."
