Congressman Yoder Opposes SOPA Legislation

Statement

Congressman Kevin Yoder stated his opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) today and will oppose the bill if brought to a vote in the House. While Congressman Yoder is concerned about copyright infringement, SOPA goes too far in combating it by imposing harsh restrictions on internet service providers and websites that will stifle innovation across the web. As the bill is overly vague, Congressman Yoder voiced concerns about the unintended consequences this legislation may have.

"While I have great concerns about the proliferation of online piracy and copyright infringement, SOPA is the wrong response from the US Congress," said Congressman Yoder. "SOPA would be overly burdensome on free speech and would stifle the creative energy that drives the internet. Congress needs to support innovation and job creation -- not limit it."

The Stop Online Piracy Act (H.R. 3261) is currently being considered by the House Judiciary Committee.
