Ackerman Statement on the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), H.R. 3261

Statement

Date: Jan. 19, 2012

U.S. Rep. Gary L. Ackerman (D-NY) issued the following statement on not supporting SOPA as currently drafted:

I want to thank the hundreds of constituents who contacted my office to let me know how concerned they are that the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) would infringe on their internet freedom. While more needs to be done to protect American intellectual property from online theft, I agree with my constituents that SOPA, as currently drafted, is certainly not the answer. We can find a way to protect intellectual property rights without stopping progress and impeding freedom of speech. I will not support SOPA in its current form.
