Ayotte: "1,000 Days with No Budget is Unacceptable"

Statement

Date: Jan. 23, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), a member of the Senate Budget Committee, released the following statement today ahead of the 1,000th day since the Senate last passed a budget:

"It's unacceptable that the Senate has gone 1,000 days without passing a budget. Since that time, Washington has spent $9.4 trillion and added $4.1 trillion to the national debt.

"Congress is required by law to produce a budget, and the American people expect us to perform this most basic, but critical, function. I'm also disappointed that, for the second year in a row, the President will miss the statutory deadline to submit his budget proposal to Congress.

"As a member of the Senate Budget Committee, I will continue to press the Democratic leadership of the Senate to allow us to fulfill our obligation to the American people and pass a responsible budget plan for our country. With $15.2 trillion in debt, we can't afford to put off the tough decisions, and the first step is passing a responsible budget blueprint that puts our country on a fiscally sustainable path."
