U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement commemorating National Human Trafficking Awareness Day:
"Today, we recognize all the children, women, and men who have been affected by human trafficking around the world. Victims of this heinous atrocity are coerced, abducted, deceived, and abused by people in positions of power into forced labor and sexual servitude. This exploitation is a major source of revenue for international criminal organizations.
"This modern-day form of slavery is an outrage to human dignity. It is important that the United States continue to take the leading role in combating human trafficking both at home and abroad.
"My colleagues and I are committed to strengthening U.S. efforts to aggressively eradicate human trafficking, including expanded measures to protect victims and holding the perpetuators accountable. I am proud that the United States is dedicated to making this fundamental human rights issue an international priority."
