Ensuring our children's security and prosperity means that we must strategically and responsibly maintain our environment, our ecology, and our natural resources. Doing so will enrich the lives, and livelihoods, of all Americans. Contrary to the ideological rhetoric of the Tea Party, responsible stewardship of our resources will promote economic growth, create jobs, and preserve our global leadership in industries such as agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and transportation.
As a member of Congress, I will advance programs that preserve and protect America's environmental legacy and take the lead in encouraging sustainable, eco-friendly, development. I will stand firm in the protection of our Great Lakes, work to broaden our mass transportation infrastructure, fight to expand our use of renewable sources of energy, and seek to develop long-term comprehensive solutions that fully incorporate environmental concerns.
Fighting Republican Attempts to Defund the EPA: Since Congressional Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in January they have attempted to reduce and even eliminate federal funding for the EPA. During the budget debate in the spring, Congressional Republican sought to entirely eliminate funding for the regulation of greenhouse gases that are linked to climate change. I understand that the government needs to evaluate and reduce spending due to the current economic climate, but I disagree that it needs to be done at the expense of our natural environment. As a member of Congress I will fight to protect the EPA from Republican attacks.
