Issue Position: Foreign Policy

Issue Position

Mike Quigley believes that we must reinvent and rethink our military posture to meet the challenges at home and abroad in the 21st century. In a time of fiscal crisis, he believes it doesn't make sense to continue building weapons designed to defeat the Soviet Union.

Mike voted to remove all troops from Afghanistan, and continues to press for an end to foreign interventions without a specific and identifiable link to American security interests. He believes in a strong national defense that is focused on defending the nation, not acting as a global policeman or engaging in nation building.

Mike believes that the only way to bring our deficit under control is to subject the entire federal budget to targeted budget cuts. These cuts must include the Department of Defense, which is too often exempted from any spending reductions and cannot currently pass an audit.

Mike stood with the Secretary of Defense in opposition to funding a second engine for the F-35, and he fought against expanding funding for the F-22 fighter jet fleet. His "Reinventing Federal Government" reports identified twelve areas where the Department of Defense could be cut without sacrificing safety, resulting in nearly $700 billion in savings.
