Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy of progress to achieve equality and advancement for all Americans. Dr. King's work is hardly finished and we must continue his pursuit of civil rights so all Americans and Oregonians have the opportunity to achieve their dreams and build stronger, healthier communities.
From his "I Have A Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to the powerful sermons he preached to his congregation, one quote sums up the challenge Dr. King posed: "The time is always right to do the right thing."
In recognition of Dr. King, I applaud Oregonians who are spending time volunteering this weekend in service to their communities, and my family and I are proud to be among them. In Oregon and around the nation, we are strongest when we come together.
