Scott on First Lady's Announcement of New Initiative for PTSD/TBI Care for Returning Veterans

Statement

Today, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (D-VA-03) joined First Lady Michelle Obama at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where she announced a new initiative to train more civilian and military doctors to diagnose and treat returning veterans for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). This effort will be led by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). Congressman Scott issued the following statement following the First Lady's announcement:

"The First Lady's announcement reflects how truly committed the Obama Administration is to our veterans, especially those returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan who have been deeply affected by PTSD and TBI. I am pleased that the First Lady took the time to visit with veterans at the Richmond Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center at the Hunter Holmes McGuire V.A. Medical Center. She then made this announcement at one of the nation's leading universities for medicine, the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. This new initiative will engage medical schools across the nation, including MCV at VCU here in Richmond and Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, to train the next generation of medical experts in diagnosing and treating PTSD and TBI. Our nation owes these men and women a tremendous debt of gratitude, and we must ensure that they have access to the best medical care available. I look forward to working with the Administration in ensuring that this initiative is a success."
