U.S. Congressman Mike Pence voted against the National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 1540) today. Below is Pence's statement:
"Providing for the common defense is the first object of the national government, but our national defense exists to protect our liberty. Throughout my career in public life, I have always believed when in doubt, err on the side of liberty.
"In regards to the National Defense Authorization Act, I strongly support its many provisions that will provide our men and women in uniform with the tools they need to get the job done and come home safe. However, unresolved issues pertaining to constitutional due process rights have raised doubts that prevent me from being able to support this legislation today.
"I look forward to continuing to work with colleagues in Congress to ensure our military and domestic security agencies have the tools and the resources necessary to protect our citizens even while we protect the constitutional rights of the American people."
