Congressman Fattah Says Race to the Top Grants Will Help U.S. to Win the Future

Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a leading Democratic appropriator for science, research and education, issues this statement as the U.S. Department of Education announces $200 million in grants for Race to the Top Round 3 to seven states:

"Low-income students across the nation and especially in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania are big winners today. Major federal resources will be flowing into our most underserved schools for the STEM subjects that are critical to our progress as a nation -- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

"Philadelphia can expect a lion's share of Pennsylvania's $41.3 million in competitive Race to the Top Round 3 funding announced today. RTT3 focuses education reform and student achievement in STEM education. These are the critical subjects that prepare our young people from poor families to become leaders and earners in tomorrow's economy -- and help us meet President Obama's goal: to win the future.

"Race to the Top, the visionary reform initiative of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, won't be stopping here. We have just appropriated another $550 million to invest our young people and to continue the cutting edge agenda of our nation's Education President."
