Tiberi: Senate's Two-Month Payroll Tax Cut Extension

Statement

Date: Dec. 20, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Pat Tiberi (R-OH) today issued the following statement regarding the payroll tax cut extension:

"The time to create certainty and stability for all workers, employers and those seeking work is now. Americans are struggling through the worst job climate since the Great Depression. The House has acted to extend the payroll tax cut for one year allowing Americans to keep more money in their pockets and providing certainty for businesses. The House bill also extended unemployment benefits for one year and included a two year Medicare "doc fix" providing certainty for seniors that they will continue to be treated by their own physicians.

All of us were taught in civics class that the way the House and Senate work out their differences is through the regular order process of a conference committee. The House has passed a one year extension of the payroll tax cut, the Senate has only passed a two month extension. The House has appointed our conferees in order to resolve the differences between the two versions of the extension. We did our job. It is time for the Senate to step up and do theirs. The American people deserve a full year payroll tax holiday, not two months. The Senate needs to come back to Washington and do the work the American people sent us here to do."
