U.S. Representative Daniel Webster (FL-08) issued the following statement on the agreement to extend the payroll tax holiday and protect small businesses from a compliance disaster:

"As a family businessman, father, and grandfather, I have been shocked by the severity of the detachment from Washington and the real world. In my first year, we have seen government squeeze by from crisis to crisis, with many lawmakers clueless of the impact on hardworking citizens in communities all across America. With only days left before a payroll tax holiday deadline, the most recent crisis came as the Senate irresponsibly passed an amendment that would have bogged small businesses down with burdensome compliance paperwork.

"I recognized this flaw and pushed to remove the bureaucratic burden. Putting more money back in the pockets of hardworking Floridians and protecting small business owners is something always worth fighting for. Government should help, not harm, America's small businesses which are the backbone of our economy.

"While I would have preferred a full-year extension or at least 3 months - the equivalent of a fiscal quarter for business planning purposes -- I'm pleased the recent agreement at least removes the most egregious provision that would have crippled small business owners," said U.S. Representative Daniel Webster.

Speaker John Boehner recognized Congressman Webster's role in this debate to protect small business owners:

"As a fellow small business owner, Daniel Webster has filled out his fair share of compliance paperwork. He understands that certainty is necessary for a business to expand and grow. I appreciate Dan's efforts this week to bring to the attention of our conference exactly what the burdens a short, two-month extension would mean for other small business owners across our nation. Individuals, families, and job creators across the state of Florida have an effective advocate on their side," said Speaker John Boehner.
