Gov. Bev Perdue today issued the following statement regarding the legislature's actions:
"Last year, the Republicans passed devastating education cuts that harmed our children's future. The cuts -- from pre-k all the way through higher education -- have led to higher class sizes, the loss of thousands of teacher and teacher assistant positions, and massive tuition hikes. Educators from across the state, including public school teachers, have been standing up and telling the truth about the harm that the Republicans' cuts are doing to our children. Shortly after 1 o'clock this morning, the Republicans in the General Assembly convened an unconstitutional session so that they could exact revenge against North Carolina teachers who opposed the damaging cuts to schools. Standing up for education is the right thing to do and should not be punished. We all owe it to our children and our state to stop these cuts and make education a priority again."
