Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ) released the following statement on his opposition to the Republican bill, HR 3630, which passed the US House of Representatives this afternoon:
I voted against this bill because it is paid for, not by the ultra-rich who are in their 11th year of a tax cut, but by the middle class and our seniors. The Republicans refuse to ask those 10,420 individuals in New Jersey making more than $1 million a year, and nearly 350,000 nationwide, to pay their fair share and thus the Republican bill threatens that 4.7 million New Jerseyans, and nearly 160 million individuals nationwide, will lose their payroll tax cut and pay $1,000 more on average.
Time is running out. New Jersey families are struggling. During this holiday season, I call on my Republican colleagues to stop playing games, to get to the negotiating table, and to agree to a bipartisan comprise to keep the payroll tax cuts for 160 million American families.
