U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, released the following remarks after the House passed the Regulations from the Executive In Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act. This bill amends the Congressional Review Act to require Congress to affirmatively approve every new major regulation proposed by the executive branch before it can be enforced on the American people. Alexander was a proud supporter of this pro-business legislation by both his affirmative vote and co-sponsorship.
"When meeting with small business owners, I always raise the question: "How can Congress help restore your fiscal certainty?' Time and time again, removing costly and confusing regulatory burdens tops their list.
"This year alone, the price tag from new regulations is $67.4 billion. Not to mention, it is estimated that job creators across the country spend around $10,500 per employee just to comply with these countless requirements. Imagine what our employers could do with even a fraction of that money back in their budgets.
"I am more than proud to support this legislation--and any legislation for that matter--which will help reduce the excessive and unnecessary regulations that are stifling our nation's job growth. Especially when taking into account America's rocky economic recovery and high unemployment rate, we should be doing everything possible to create favorable circumstances for businesses to expand.
"As Members of Congress, it is our duty to advance sound policies that support economic liberty and provide the private sector with the means to succeed. If we do not, Washington will be responsible for making the American Dream a thing of the past."
