Rep. Becerra Votes Against Republican Bill that Could Cost 140,000 Americans Their Jobs

Statement

Date: Dec. 13, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

Today the House of Representatives voted to pass legislation (H.R. 3630) that economists say could cost 140,000 Americans their jobs, cut unemployment benefits for more than 3 million Americans -- more than 584,000 in California alone-- and increase the federal deficit by $25 billion according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office. Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-31), Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and Ranking Member of the Social Security Subcommittee, voted against the legislation and released the following statement:

"It's about priorities. Instead of working with Democratic members in the House and Senate to pass a clean extension of President Obama's payroll tax cut for 160 million working middle class Americans, Republicans continued to push an agenda that would cut unemployment benefits for 3.3 million Americans, cost 140,000 Americans their jobs and increase the federal deficit by $25 billion. Let's stop wasting time on legislation that is justifiably dead on arrival in the Senate. It's time to pass legislation that strengthens our economy by creating jobs, not eliminating them."
