Congressman Tim Scott released the following statement following the defeat of H.J. Res. 2, or the Balanced Budget Amendment, in the House of Representatives.

"It is unbelievable that, even in the face of nine percent unemployment and a $15 trillion debt, balancing the federal budget was turned into a partisan war by the other side of the aisle. Requiring the federal government to spend within its means is a simple, commonsense way to bring our nation back towards fiscal sanity. With polls conducted earlier this year showing nearly three-quarters of the American people support a Balanced Budget Amendment, this seemed an easy choice to make.

However, despite the BBA being defeated today we will continue putting in the hard work needed to change the culture of Washington. The past three years have seen the largest increase in debt under one Administration in our nation's history, showing the urgency needed to tackle this problem. We will move forward with new efforts to control federal spending, create jobs and get our country on the right track."
