Reps. Young, Peterson Host Universal Service Fund Briefing

Press Release

After founding the House Universal Service Fund (USF) Caucus, Congressman Don Young (AK) and Congressman Collin Peterson (MN) hosted the caucus' first event this afternoon. As the first part in a four part series, today's event looked at the differing opinions as to how the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) High Cost Fund will be affected following the FCC's November 23, 2011 Order. This Order is supposed to revamp the High Cost Fund to support broadband networks, ensure fiscal responsibility, demand accountability, and enact market-driven and incentive-based policies.

"Today's event was nothing short of a success," said Rep. Young. "It's very telling to me that as I looked out into the standing room only audience today that packed a committee room, I can see there are a lot of people concerned with the new FCC Order. If we're going to ensure that rural America's communications needs are met in the same way as their urban counterparts are, we can't do it without the private and public sectors working together and that's what I am trying to do with this caucus.

"The caucus meeting today was a sign that many people want to address issues with the new FCC order on the High Cost Fund," Rep. Peterson said. "I'm glad to be working with Rep. Young to address rural America's communications needs."

"It is important for people to know that this is just the first step," Rep. Young continued. "There are many more steps and we need Congress to get more involved. I want to thank my good friend Congressman Peterson for co-chairing the USF caucus with me and I look forward to working with him in the future on this crucial issue."
