Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45), Co-Chairman of the Congressional Caucus on Prescription Drug Abuse, today applauded the efforts of drug store chain CVS to help crack down on prescription drug abuse, now the fastest-growing drug problem in America:
Mr. Larry J. Merlo
President and Chief Executive Officer
CVS Caremark Corporation
One CVS Drive
Woonsocket, RI 02895
Dear Mr. Merlo:
I am writing to commend your efforts in Florida to refuse to fill Schedule 2 narcotic pain-pill prescriptions, such as Oxycontin, from high-prescribing doctors. As you are well aware, prescription drug abuse has reached epidemic levels and is threatening not only the future of our youth, but also millions of adults and families across our nation.
According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, prescription drug abuse increased by 400% over a ten-year period from 1998 to 2008 and is the second most prevalent form of illicit drug use in America. In Congress, I have been at the forefront of efforts to reverse this epidemic and the ramifications it has on teenagers and families, and will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that as a nation we face this challenge without turning a blind eye.
We need more corporate leaders to stand up like you and fight against inappropriate or excessive use of prescription drugs. I look forward to working with you to identify ways in which we can collaborate on this important issue of life or death for so many families.
