Statement on Super Committee's Failure to Act

Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) released the following statement today, on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction's failure to come to agreement on a long-term plan to reduce the deficit and put the country on a fiscally sustainable path.

"I strongly support a bold and balanced approach to reducing the deficit that also grows our economy and creates new jobs. I am extremely disappointed that the Congressional Super Committee was unable to reach a deal on a long-term plan to reduce the deficit and jumpstart our economic recovery."

"Unfortunately, a comprehensive plan could not be achieved because Republicans continue to insist on extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and repealing the Medicare guarantee -- while refusing to accept a jobs proposal. By rejecting a balanced approach to dealing with this crisis, Republicans continue to put their anti-tax ideology over the well being of the American people."

"While I am very concerned about the impact of the Super Committee's failure on our economic recovery, I am glad to know that vital programs like Medicaid, Social Security, Veterans' benefits, and SNAP will be protected from the automatic "sequestration' cuts now set to go into effect for 2013. Nevertheless, Congress and the Administration have a responsibility to come together and produce a long term strategy that reduces our deficit and creates the jobs that American families need."
