U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, MI-08, issued the following statement after voting to reign in out-of-control Washington spending with a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
"Congress has passed a balanced budget only five times in the past 50 years, yet Michigan families have to live within a balanced budget every day of every year because unpaid bills would likely result in their financial ruin.
"The federal government currently faces a budget deficit of more than $1 trillion for the third consecutive year and $15 trillion in debt because it has not kept the government's financial house in order. Washington cannot continue to steal future opportunity from our children and grandchildren by spending money that we do not have and borrowing it largely from other nations.
"A Balanced Budget Amendment is the only way that we can ensure that Congress does not continue to spend more than it takes in."
The amendment required a 2/3 majority -- or 286 votes -- to pass the House of Representatives, but it garnered only 261.
