Statement by John Kerry on Yesterday's Passage of Rep. Jim Davis's Amendment to the Treasury and Transportation Appropriations Bill in the House of Representatives

For Immediate Release

West Palm Beach, FL - "This week the House voted by a bipartisan 51-vote margin to undo George Bush's anti-family policy of placing inhumane restrictions on the ability of Cuban Americans to visit their relatives in Cuba. I believe George Bush's cynical, election-year policy only punishes the Cuban people and Cuban Americans with family on the island while doing nothing to hasten the end of the Castro regime. In the wake of the recent hurricanes, Cuba's brutal dictator has refused our humanitarian aid at the expense of his own people - showing the oppressive nature of his regime. Cuban Americans need to be able to help their families - especially when crisis strikes.

"I hope these pro-family provisions will become law, repairing some of the damage caused by George Bush's anti-family choices. When I'm president, I will support effective and peaceful strategies that will hasten the end of the Castro regime without punishing families."
