To lower our record-setting deficits and debt and bolster economic growth, I believe federal budget reforms are imperative - including a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution.
Including this year, I have cosponsored six bipartisan bills that would require the federal budget to be balanced annually. This week I voted for a bipartisan bill -- H J Res 2-- which would require the federal government to live within its means, and directs the President to submit a balanced budget to Congress annually.
This is a common sense idea that every Utah family and small business understands. Forty-nine out of 50 states are required to adopt a balanced budget. That forces states to look at where every dollar is spent; a balanced budget amendment would set structural reforms on the federal budget process and I believe require more fiscal discipline.
I have voted for deep spending cuts. I have voted for discretionary spending caps. Now is the time to add a Balanced Budget Amendment as a way to further constrain deficits and debt and put our country on a sustainable path. As always I am eager to hear your opinion.
