U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, PA-11, said Friday's jobs report showing the national unemployment rate remaining at 9 percent proves President Obama's economic policies are failing the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Rep. Barletta also called on the U.S. Senate to act on almost two dozen job-creating bills that are stuck in that chamber.
"Our unemployment rate is at or above 9 percent for yet another month. That's where it's been for 28 out of the last 30 months. Not since the Great Depression has it been so high for so long. It's time for the Senate to stop playing politics and vote on the 22 job-creating bills already passed by the House and get people back to work," Rep. Barletta said. "Just last night, I voted for two job-creating bills that will help entrepreneurs raise capital, start businesses, and grow.
"It's also time for the president to put aside the campaign rhetoric and show leadership on the jobs issue. President Obama says Congress isn't doing anything to help create jobs, but the fact that 22 House-passed job-creating bills sit in the Senate prove that he's incorrect. This is the same president who told the American people that his $1 trillion stimulus plan would keep unemployment under 8 percent. We can't wait for the president to call on the Senate to act," Rep. Barletta said.
The two most-recent job-creating bills Rep. Barletta voted for were the Access to Capital for Job Creators Act (H.R. 2940) and the Entrepreneur Access to Capital Act (H.R. 2930). Both were passed with bipartisan support Thursday night. They will make it easier for small businesses and start-ups to access the resources they need to expand and hire new workers, and will foster a better environment for private-sector job creation and long-term economic growth.
"Twenty-two bipartisan, job-creating bills are in the Senate's lap right now. The Senate needs to pass them and spur economic growth and opportunity in Northeastern Pennsylvania and around the country," Rep. Barletta said.
