Congressman Bill Shuster issued the following statement on the ongoing events at Penn State University:
"The alleged crimes reported in the grand jury indictment against Jerry Sandusky are shocking and disturbing. This is a tragedy for the victims who have had their childhood taken away from them and for their families who have suffered in silence. Child abuse in any form cannot be tolerated.
While Joe Paterno has made many important contributions to the University during his tenure as coach and been seen as a moral icon for NCAA Sports for close to half a century, he so fumbled his moral and professional responsibilities in this instance that it cannot be overlooked. The Penn State Board of Trustees did the right thing last night in terminating both Graham Spanier and Joe Paterno. The university must comply fully with all internal and external investigations and focus their efforts to restore honor to what is still a world-class university."
