Honoring Our Nation`s Veterans

Statement

This Friday, November 11th, marks Veterans Day. This is the time for us to come together as a nation and honor the men and women of our military. For their bravery, dedication and honorable service - they have the thanks of a grateful nation. I look forward to participating in several events this week to honor our Veterans.

I want to thank everyone who attended today's Veterans Expo at the Knights of Columbus in Newtown Square. We had a great turnout.

Below are just a few highlights from the past two weeks. To learn more about what I have been working on, please visit my website and my Facebook page.

Legislative Update
Here are a few of the job-creating bills recently passed by the House of Representatives:
- H.R. 674, a bipartisan bill to repeal the burdensome three percent withholding tax on transactions between government and businesses. This is a bill that I strongly supported. You can read more about the issue here.
- H.R. 2940, the Access to Capital for Job Creators Act. I am a cosponsor of this bill, which will give small businesses the help they need to raise capital more efficiently. For any entrepreneur, accessing initial capital is difficult in this economy.

Jobs in Marcus Hook
I'm pleased to share some good news for our region. Last week, the House passed a proposal to re-flag three natural gas transport ships, a change that will allow hundreds of energy and construction jobs to be created in Southeastern Pennsylvania. I fought to add this proposal to H.R. 3321, the America's Cup Act, which was abruptly introduced last week to allow foreign yachts to enter United States' ports for the sailing competition.I refuse to allow for foreign yacht owners the opportunities that were being denied to workers in Pennsylvania. Read more about the issue here.

"Go Big" on Debt Solution
Last week, I joined a bipartisan group of 100 Members of Congress in sending a letter to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, also known as the supercommittee, asking it to consider all options as it works to reach a $4 trillion deficit reduction solution by the November 23 deadline. Our message was simple and clear: think big. Our fiscal future is tied to the success of the supercommittee.

Threat from Iran
Recently, as Chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Couterterrorism and Intelligence, I chaired a hearing examining "Iran Terror Operations on American Soil." Following the recent foiled Iranian sponsored assassination plot was revealed.

We are seeing many Vets struggling with substance abuse and other issues related to the difficulties of service. Unfortunately, these men and women often end up in the court system. It is our duty to make sure these issues are being properly addressed in the courts. We've seen that Veterans Treatment Courts are working for our Vets, and I'm working on legislation to ensure that communities across the country are able to establish these courts.

Juvenile Diabetes Awareness
At the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's annual walk in Philadelphia on October 23rd, I addressed the crowd and spoke about diabetes awareness. This is an issue that is very close to my heart, and I was pleased to participate.

Sincerely,

Patrick Meehan
