Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25) issued the following statement after Palestine was granted full membership in the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO.)

"UNESCO's membership approval of Palestine undermines the advancement of peace in the Middle East and should not be tolerated. This is part of a broader Palestinian effort to gain statehood by circumventing the peace process and should be met with immediate censure by the United States.

"According to U.S. Code, the United States should not fund "Nations or any specialized agency thereof which accords the Palestine Liberation Organization the same standing as member states.' The Administration must act swiftly to withhold U.S. funding to UNESCO.

"Funding is the greatest leverage we have in achieving true reform in the United Nations. We have a responsibility to our Israeli allies and, more importantly to the American taxpayer, that we will not send hard earned tax dollars to raise the status of Palestine or any Nation that promotes extreme bias and radical, anti-American agendas."
