To celebrate Veterans Day today, Governor Kitzhaber will ride with the Oregon Mounted Governor's Guard in the City of Albany's 60th Veterans Day Parade. Albany hosts the largest Veterans Day parade west of the Mississippi and this is the parade's 60th anniversary. Veterans Day traces its roots back to the armistice of World War I that went into effect at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month. The parade will begin at 11 a.m.
"I encourage all Oregonians to pause this Veterans Day to recognize the service and sacrifice of our veterans. We celebrate them for their dedication and commitment to honor, duty and country. We owe our veterans from every era a debt of gratitude. For our troops currently deployed overseas, please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers," said Governor Kitzhaber.
